Abstract

There were thousands of “dead” spaces like the lot I had observed, thousands of transitional environments that no one saw, that had been rendered invisible because they were not “of use.” Anything could inhabit them for a time without anyone noticing.

Jeff Vandermeer, Annihilation

amidst soaring green reliefs of ailanthus altissima, winding ficus carica, extensive and inaccessible agglomerations of rubus ulmifolius, periscopic alcea rosea and dappled blankets of trifolium campestre, observed from below by dark rabbit holes and from above by the susceptible circling of seagulls, cotissi, scraps and fragments of glass of various shapes emerge from the ground, demanding presence: like bulbs, tubers and rhizomes, in spite of biosystemic habits, the amorphous solid is about to bud: an alien ecosystem takes shape.

Exhibitions

2024

Presented at the Hotel Il PalazzoExperimental on the occasion of The Venice Glass Week 2024 inside the collective exhibition Fluid Matter.

Fluid Matter is a collective exhibition that aims to explore the possibilities offered to the multiple languages of contemporary artistic research when confronted with an ancient and unique material such as glass. For this reason, artists with different approaches to the material and professional backgrounds have been invited to participate: some work almost exclusively with glass, while others use it only occasionally as a medium; some already have consolidated experience of exhibitions and awards, while others are just beginning to engage with the art world; some are more focused on practice, while others have a more theoretical approach; some work mainly on form, while others start from political, social, and existential issues. The exhibition is the brainchild of the Mollified collective, composed of Cosima Montavoci and Lorenzo Passi, two artists who mostly work independently but who have drawn the strength and inspiration behind the Fluid Matter project from their experience of working together. The two explain the reasons behind the exhibition as follows: “We believe in the diversity of experiences and approaches and in the need for opportunities for exchange between different voices. We believe that the resulting dialogue leads to mutual enrichment and new and original visions. We want to create a place for dialogue and discussion, which can accommodate different contributions and provide creative ideas thanks to unusual combinations, perhaps laying the foundations for future collaborations.” Fluid Matter is hosted by Il Palazzo Experimental, a recently opened hotel in Venice, in the Dorsoduro district, in a building that was once the headquarters of the Compagnia Adriatica di Navigazione. The hotel overlooks the Fondamenta delle Zattere, a promenade dear to Venetians and many personalities who have marked the cultural life of the city. The design of its interiors is inspired by Venetian motifs: the stripes of the “paline de casada,” the floors with glass tiles by Carlo Scarpa, the sofas that allude to the shapes of the padded backrests in gondolas. However, these references are transfigured into a new synthesis, unusual for Venice. The main part of the exhibition will be housed in the first-floor hall, which opens to the south with a Gothic five-light window overlooking the Giudecca Canal and to the north onto the palace garden.
